星空无限传媒 (SMCC) and STRIVE U (SU) have entered into a new partnership for SMCC to offer programming that will provide vital skills training for SU students.
SMCC and STRIVE U signed off on a memorandum of understanding this month that will provide programming for 14 SU students starting this summer and continuing through the 2020-21 academic year.听 STRIVE U is a program offered through PSL Services/STRIVE, a nonprofit organization that helps young people with intellectual disabilities live with dignity and respect as active members of the community.
Under the agreement, participating SU students will take part in orientation sessions at SMCC this summer to introduce them to college life and make them feel at home on campus. Students will then take two courses in the Fall Semester and two more in the Spring Semester on Professional Presence, Microsoft Applications, Customer Service and Interpersonal Skills.
鈥淪MCC is proud to enter into this agreement to teach STRIVE U students skills that will open up employment opportunities and help them live independently,鈥 said SMCC President Joe Cassidy. 鈥淪MCC is committed to student success, whether they are earning a degree, undergoing workforce training or taking part in customized programs such as this.鈥
PSL Services/STRIVE Executive Director Lori Sanville said she鈥檚 excited to be partnering with SMCC and bringing the STRIVE U Program to SMCC鈥檚 South Portland Campus.
鈥淭he combination of courses, co-curricular activities, involvement in student life and many other opportunities make this a tremendous match for our program,鈥 Sanville said. 鈥淲e have been very impressed by SMCC鈥檚 administration for their creativity and desire to make this happen and work for all involved.听 We鈥檙e excited to get started.鈥
Students participating in the new program will be issued SMCC identification cards and free bus passes, and will be invited to participate in SMCC鈥檚 graduation ceremony in May. SMCC will provide a part-time coordinator to oversee the program.
